History and present-day of PSEs
The occurrence of paving shaped elements dates deep into history. The first slabs were made of stone, to be later replaced by those of concrete. In ancient Rome they used to employ paving stones for arrangement of pathways and roads in park and garden areas. Even in those early times the predecessors of PSEs were made with use of concrete mixture.
The Romans used the Greek word “emplekton” to refer to cast masonry with rock aggregate.
Many hundreds of years have passed since then. Nowadays, standard concrete slabs are used along with the entire range of paving shaped elements to arrange sidewalks and other areas of pedestrian traffic, garden alleys and walkways, boulevards, botanic gardens, urban squares, etc.
In Ukraine the paving shaped elements are used primarily for arrangement of sideways and pavements, squares, and areas adjoining to private or community buildings. The ornamentation and color scale of paving slabs are compliant with the strictest requirements of present-day architecture and esthetics.
